James H. Campbell was released from Point Lookout, Maryland on Saturday June 24, 1865, after signing his oath of allegiance to the United States. He returned to his career as a printer. Although the location of where he worked is not known at this time, he did join the Richmond Typographical Union (No. 90) in Richmond, Virginia.
Mary Frances Campbell died ca. July 1871, and James Harvey Campbell died on Monday May 5, 1879 of scrofulous disease of the bladder. His funeral was held on Wednesday May 7, 1879 at Leigh Street Baptist Church. He and his family are buried in a family plot in Oakwood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia.
